The 2019 Honda CR-V and 2019 Toyota RAV4 are two of the best-selling vehicles in the United States, and for good reason: both are reliable and versatile SUVs suited for many different lifestyles, with spacious interiors, convenient cargo options, affordable price tags, and great resale value.
While the 2019 Toyota RAV4 features a larger touchscreen and an extra styling option with its optional rugged-looking Adventure trim, the 2019 Honda CR-V is the clear winner between these two vehicles in terms of value and comfort. The CR-V carries a lower MSRP at all comparable trim levels between the CR-V and RAV4. It also boasts significantly more passenger and cargo space, making better use of its interior volume although both vehicles have similar exterior dimensions.
The 2019 Toyota RAV4 has a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four with an eight speed automatic transmission, versus the Honda CR-V’s turbocharged 1.5-liter four mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission. Although the RAV4 should produce more horsepower than the CR-V, Car and Driver found that the Honda CR-V’s engine outperformed that of the Toyota RAV4 in acceleration testing, reaching 60 mph in 7.4 seconds compared to 8.1 seconds for the RAV4. The RAV4’s larger engine also produces more noise, with Car and Driver calling it “buzzy and intrusive.”
Although the 2019 Toyota RAV4 is undoubtedly an excellent SUV, it simply falls short in several areas where the 2019 Honda CR-V excels, such as passenger comfort, engine performance, and price point. It’s no wonder that Honda was named 2019’s Best SUV Brand by U.S. News and World Report, and that the CR-V was named Kelley Blue Book’s 2019 Best Buy in the Compact SUV category.
