What is Collision Mitigation Braking System™?

Mechanic Working On Brakes

The Honda Sensing™ suite includes a variety of safety features, including the Honda Collision Mitigation Braking System™. This system can detect a possible frontal collision, and sends warnings to the driver to brake. Although it’s not a substitute for paying attention to your surroundings, this system is one of many ways a new Honda vehicle will work to keep you safer as you travel Portland roads.

How Does CMBS™ Work?

CMBS is radar- and camera-powered; it uses a transmitter that’s built into the grille trim to determine the distance and closing speed of objects in front of you. The system collects information using radar and camera tech, then determines whether a frontal collision is imminent. If so, it’ll visually and audibly warn the driver to apply the brakes and/or steer the car out of harm’s way. If the driver doesn’t react in time, the system can actually apply the brakes on their behalf.

What are the Danger Stages of CMBS™?

CMBS™ has three stages that it employs to warn or intervene if a possible frontal collision is detected by its radar and camera systems, which include:

  • Stage 1: Visual and audio warnings are given to notify the driver that an object, such as a car or pedestrian, is ahead. This gives the driver time to react.
  • Stage 2: If the driver doesn’t react in time, the brakes will be lightly applied to slow down the vehicle, helping to prevent a frontal collision.
  • Stage 3: If greater stopping power is needed, the brakes are applied even more strongly to reduce speed significantly.

Stage 2 and Stage 3 are included for added reassurance, but hopefully, you’ll never need them. The idea of the Collision Mitigation Braking System™ is to provide enough of a warning to the driver, so there’s plenty of time to brake.
