What’s the Difference Between a Hybrid vs. Electric Car?

Close Up Of Hand Holding Power Cable For electric car

If you’re like a lot of Wilsonville drivers, you may be thinking that switching to an electrified car is the way to go to get relief from climbing gas prices. But which kind of electrified car should you get, a hybrid or electric vehicle? Is there a difference? If you’re having a hybrid vs. electric car debate, we’re here to help. So, we’ve put together a hybrid cars vs. electric cars comparison below.

Hybrid vs. Electric Car – Keeping It Powered

Fully electric vehicles need to be recharged in order to run, which means you will need to allot significant time to charging. An 80% charge can take about half an hour if you find a public level 2 charging unit. A level 2 home unit can take a couple of hours, depending on the vehicle, whereas just plugging your car into a 120v outlet can take over 12 hours. Charging is not an issue with most hybrid cars, as they are not completely electric. The gas engine charges the battery as the car runs. So, this may be the more convenient option for busy Portland drivers. An exception would be plug-in hybrids, but even then, the gas engine will take over if the electric motor’s battery dies.

Hybrid Cars vs. Electric Cars – Fuel Efficiency

Hybrid cars can be very fuel efficient. TheHonda Insight, for example, can deliver an estimated 55 miles Fully electric cars, on the other hand, use no gas as they are powered completely by a battery and an electric motor, producing zero emissions. So, you may never have the need to visit another Sherwood gas station. However, there is the cost of electricity to consider.

Hybrid vs. Electric Car – Sticker Price and Overall Cost

The upfront cost of a hybrid car is usually much lower than a fully electric vehicle. It’s not uncommon for a hybrid vehicle, like the Honda Accord Hybrid to be priced in the mid $20,000s. However, an electric car requires no stops at the fuel pump and very little maintenance. That means you won’t be paying for regular oil changes.
